Effect of Lepa Chikitsa in Ayurveda on Kandu in Eka Kushta: A Comprehensive Review

Author : Dr. Sanjay Burde and Dr. Subhash Suddalwar

Abstract :

Eka Kushta, a Kshudra Kushta predominantly involving Vata-Kapha Dosha, closely resembles psoriasis in modern medicine, characterized by extensive, non-sweating, fish-scale-like lesions with severe Kandu (pruritus). Kandu, a cardinal symptom, significantly impairs quality of life and is primarily attributed to Kapha-Pitta vitiation, though Vata involvement contributes to dryness and chronicity. Lepa Chikitsa (external herbal paste application) is a cornerstone of Bahya Parimarjana Chikitsa in Ayurveda, offering direct, localized therapy to the affected skin (Twak). This review examines classical Ayurvedic treatises and contemporary evidence to evaluate the efficacy of Lepa in managing Kandu in Eka Kushta. Findings indicate that Lepa formulations, possessing Kapha-Pitta Shamaka, Kleda Shoshaka, and Twak Prasadana properties, effectively reduce itching, scaling, and inflammation. By restoring Twak Dhatu equilibrium and pacifying Doshas at Sthanasamshraya, Lepa provides a safe, non-invasive, and sustainable therapeutics.
